Ground Testing

In Ground Testing, the ground stands as a reference point for an electrical circuit from which voltages are measured. This reference point is important as it prevents personnel from contact to dangerous voltages, which can result in fires. It also prevents the build-up of electrostatic charges that cause damage to sensitive equipment.
Ground testing also known as Soil Sensitivity Testing, is the measurement of a specified volume of soil to determine its conductivity. The conductivity represents the ability of the soil to conduct an electric current. Thus, it is important to note how the equipment is resistive to the ground.

Reasons to conduct Ground Testing;

  •  Prevent potential damage to electrostatic sensitive equipment
  •  Ensure safety of personnel on site
  •  Reduce operation down time and overall damage costs
  •  Determine condition of grounding equipment such as ground rods, ground grids, electrical equipment bonding and building steel bonding.

There are various methods that can used to conduct Ground Testing such as the Clamp- on Test and 3- point test.

Also known as Induced Frequency Testing, is one the newest forms of ground testing methods for measure soil resistivity to grounding system. This test is the only test that can be conducted when the grounding system is active.
